Throughout 2023, EcoAlbania continued its work to protect Albania’s rivers, biodiversity, and natural ecosystems through scientific research, advocacy, environmental education, community engagement, and public awareness. The year marked a historic milestone for river conservation with the declaration of the Vjosa Wild River National Park, the first of its kind in Europe and the result of years of collaboration among local communities, scientists, civil society organizations, institutions, and national and international partners.
Building on this achievement, EcoAlbania continued to promote the effective and long-term protection of the Vjosa River and its tributaries while supporting scientific research and advocating for inclusive, evidence-based environmental governance. Particular attention was given to emerging pressures within the Vjosa basin, including threats to the Shushica River, highlighting the importance of protecting the ecological integrity of the entire river network and ensuring the meaningful participation of local communities in decisions affecting their natural resources.
Beyond the Vjosa, EcoAlbania worked to strengthen biodiversity conservation and ecological connectivity across Albania through cooperation with local communities, public institutions, schools, researchers, and environmental organizations. Environmental education and awareness-raising activities engaged pupils, teachers, young people, and local stakeholders, encouraging greater understanding of ecosystems and more active participation in nature conservation.
Through scientific collaboration, advocacy, public campaigns, media outreach, environmental education, and partnerships at the national and international levels, EcoAlbania contributed to advancing nature conservation and strengthening public support for the protection of Albania’s natural heritage. The achievements of 2023 demonstrated the impact of long-term cooperation and collective action while laying the foundations for the continued protection and sustainable management of the Vjosa and other important ecosystems across the country.
