Këlcyrë, October 19, 2023. The environmental education team conducted an educational session in Këlcyrë with students from the 9-year school “Kamber Benja”. The participating children had the opportunity to learn more about the importance of preserving the nature in which they live through good environmental habits. Nestled between the Trebeshinë and Dhëmbelit mountains, Këlcyra is a place of unparalleled natural beauty. The Vjosë River flows through this enchanting landscape, making it an attractive panorama for everyone.
As locals of a picturesque landscape, they were also informed about the consequences of human pollution on nature and how to preserve it through good environmental practices. Through a simple experiment on soil filtration, they understood the effects of water pollution on soil quality. The tools for this experiment, such as plastic bottles, stones, water, and oil, can be easily found, and anyone can develop it with a few simple steps.

The enthusiastic children carried out the experiment: they first cut a bottle in half and turned it upside down. Then, after poking some holes in the cap, they filled it with stones and poured water mixed with oil. During the experiment, they observed how the oil stayed among the stones, and the clean water passed through, understanding the practical process of water filtration.
Through a role-playing game, they also showcased their artistic skills in the “Litter thrower” game, where they personified individuals intentionally polluting the environment, and their classmates had to find them. The development of experiments and interactive games not only promotes awareness of the importance of environmental protection but also encourages students to take concrete actions. These educational activities aim to develop critical thinking skills by encouraging students to analyze environmental issues and think of innovative solutions.
Environmental education is a mission that starts from an early age and has an impact on all generations, hoping that children will be aware to take small steps in their education and will convey valuable messages to the adults around them.
Teachers or school leaders who wish to develop environmental education classes in their school can become part of the education project by contacting the project coordinator Marina Xhaho at the e-mail address: [email protected].
