The participation of women in meetings focused on environmental issues and decision-making processes remains low, a reality observed not only in these areas but also more broadly throughout the country. Expert Elona Dhëmbo gave a presentation on the importance of involving women and marginalized groups in the management of water resources, particularly within the Vjosa River basin.
During the discussion, participants shared experiences where their voices had often gone unheard, or they had not been informed about such initiatives. The need to speak up and be heard emerged as one of the key themes of the debate, with several women sharing personal stories about their efforts to take part in protests and discussions on environmental protection.
Inspiring Stories of Women Connected to Vjosa
A highlight of the event was the sharing of stories from five women deeply connected to the Vjosa River. Moderator and interviewer Rashela Shehu shared her experience of interviewing and documenting their stories, presenting narratives from:
- Irma Tako – rafting guide and leader of Vjosa Explorer
- Dr. Fundime Osmani – researcher of Vjosa’s invertebrates and member of Scientists for Vjosa
- Laerta Tani – teacher in Këlcyrë
- Albiona Muçoimaj – guide along the Vjosa river and activist
- Lejla Qejvani – activist from Vlora advocating for the protection of the Shushica River
Participants had the opportunity to view photos and videos from the interview process, gaining deeper insight into the efforts of these women to preserve and promote the values of Vjosa, as well as hear the experiences directly from two of the interviewed women.
The event became an open platform for dialogue, where women exchanged ideas and discussed ways to have a greater impact on environmental decision-making processes. Through the sharing of experiences and inspiring stories, the importance of their engagement in protecting rivers and natural ecosystems was emphasised. A particularly enjoyable and engaging aspect of the gathering was the sharing of homemade food prepared by the participants, accompanied by the sounds of a polyphonic music group.
This initiative aims to highlight the challenges faced by these women, promote their rights, and encourage more women to take an active role in environmental protection.
