The trans-boundary summer school

The trans-boundary summer school, part of the environmental education program with youngsters, this summer was held in Rugovo on July 18th-23rd, 2018 as a collaboration between EcoAlbania in Albania, Balkans Peace Project (B3P) based in the UK, ERA group in Kosovo and Green Home in Montenegro.

Albanian artists united in a song to protect the rivers of Albania.

The green song “Blessed be the Free River” tries to contribute on behalf of the causes that protect the river Valbona and the last wild river in Europe, Vjosa. Musicians, producers, musicologists, historians and artists, Albanian and international: Elina Duni, Eda Zari, Lina Rukaj, Rhani Krija, Vlashent Sata, Emiljano Dhimo, Shpat Deda, Gert Kapo, Henning Jung, Kleidi Eski, Sokol Çunga, Mikaela Minga, all together collaborated and produced the song and video “Blessed be the Free River”. This song (an initiative of the duo Duni – Zari) came as a need to spread information about the systematic injustice that is done to the areas of these rivers. At the same time, the song goes for supporting the awareness of this cause amongst our society.

Kajak protest for the protection of the Vjosa

Standing behind a symbolic dam built of kayaks, the activists of the Balkan Rivers Tour together with local NGO-s and Albanian citizens protested against the decision of the Albanian Government to build the Kalivaç HPP on the Vjosa river. They asked to the Prime Minister Rama to declare the Last Wild River National Park of Vjosa. Then they marched toward the dam, destroying it.

Civil society undertakes the initiative to amend the law on concessions of HPPs in Albania

Tirana, November 8th, 2018. National and local environmental organizations, together with law and environmental experts, have undertaken a civic legal initiative for changes to the HPP concession package. They have made a thorough analysis of the four sectors, energy, tourism, environment and water policies, strategies and legislation in the spirit of their approximation with EU legislation.

We all need water to survive. But without healthy rivers, lakes and wetlands, there is no water. The sources of Europe’s water are protected under EU law – but many EU governments want to weaken the law. Together, we MUST stop this from happening. The European Commission now wants you to have your say through its public consultation. This is your only chance to tell them to keep our water law strong.

EcoAlbania organized an open meeting on the topic "The importance of providing environmental information for an active society” during which the study "Environmental Information Management in Albania" was presented. Attendees, environmental CSOs, journalists, students, representatives of state institutions, etc. were introduced with the analysis of the legal framework and environmental information management at the local and national level, based on the information generated by the Report on the Environment State of Albania (RESA).

Hydropower projects on the Vjosa: Bern Convention opens case-file against Albania

Strasbourg, December 3, 2018 - The Bern Convention decided to open a case-file and called on the Albanian government to halt the hydropower plant projects on the Vjosa River. Instead, the government should prepare appropriate strategic environmental impact assessments and additional studies to evaluate the environmental impacts of the projected hydropower plants. The Vjosa is one of the very last unspoilt rivers of Europe. As part of the campaign “Save the Blue Heart of Europe”, environmental NGOs EuroNatur (Germany), Riverwatch (Austria) and EcoAlbania fight to protect the Vjosa.

Scientists from Albania, Austria and Germany join forces to protect the Vjosa river

Tirana, December 6 th 2018. More than 60 scientists from Albania, Austria and Germany have collected their knowledge about the biodiversity and ecology of the Vjosa – the last wild river in Europe and published it on a scientific volume. Some of the data were published for the first time in Acta ZooBot Austria and were presented in Tirana on a workshop organized from the University of Tirana, University of Vienna and BOKU University, Vienna.
