“Saving Europe’s last free flowing wild river – Vjosa/ Aoos” project aims at raising the public awareness about Vjosa River, its ecological values and vulnerability and its protection of the river from HPP plans.
It is a continuation of the Save the blue “Heart of Europe Campaign”, a Balkan-wide campaign, initiated by international organizations EuroNatur and Riverwatch and implemented in cooperation with national partner organizations like EcoAlbania in Albania. It’s aim is protecting the most valuable rivers in South East Europe from destruction by uncontrolled hydropower projects.
The Vjosa river in Albania is one of the last intact natural rivers in Europe outside Russia. While the Albanian government wants to build dams in the river – starting with the Kalivaç dam – the alternative vision is to establish Europe´s first Wild River National Park.
