Nature-based Restoration of the Buna River
EcoAlbania has developed a Technical Feasibility and Implementation Plan for the restoration of a priority 450-metre reach along the Buna River in Shkodër County. The intervention addresses active riverbank erosion, the progressive disconnection of a natural secondary channel, and fragmented riparian vegetation by working with the river’s natural processes rather than against them.
The plan combines the controlled reconnection of the secondary channel with selective stabilisation of vulnerable riverbank sections and the restoration of native riparian vegetation. Instead of extensive hard engineering or continuous bank armouring, the intervention prioritises bioengineering techniques, locally sourced willow and other native plant material, and natural regeneration. Physical works will be limited to areas where intervention is necessary, while existing vegetation and ecologically valuable habitats will be protected.
Ultimately, the project aims to create a more connected, resilient and ecologically functional river corridor, allowing the natural dynamics of the Buna River and recovering riparian vegetation to progressively provide the long-term restoration and stabilisation functions.
