Restoration of Buna riverbanks with plant engineering
Within the framework of an international cooperation between EcoAlbania and the French organization SISMAE, a restoration project has been initiated along the banks of the Buna River in Shkodra County to address significant erosion and ecosystem degradation. Field assessments and comparative satellite image analyses have revealed notable morphological changes in the river’s course, including the loss of riparian land and the gradual disconnection of a secondary branch.
The project aims to restore the river’s natural functioning through an integrated approach that combines nature-based solutions (NbS), such as planting native riparian vegetation, with ecological engineering techniques. This approach not only helps stabilize riverbanks and reduce erosion but also enhances ecological connectivity and creates new habitats for biodiversity.
A key aspect of the project is its social dimension. Erosion poses a direct threat to agricultural land on which local communities depend, particularly women engaged in food production. The project seeks to safeguard these livelihoods by involving communities in both planning and implementation processes, while promoting gender equality and social inclusion.
Through activities such as local consultations, youth training, field interventions, and long-term monitoring, the project aims to establish a sustainable model for river management. It contributes to strengthening local capacities, raising awareness, and building resilience to climate-related challenges.
Ultimately, this project represents a successful integration of nature conservation and community well-being, striving to achieve a sustainable balance between the natural dynamics of the river and the needs of the people living alongside it.
