The scientific conference about Vjosa in Tirana
Scientists from Albania, Austria and Germany are continuing the discussions about the last natural river in Europe, but have already moved from the hall of the Faculty of Natural Sciences to the most favorite ground of their work. Today they will visit Vjosa in its most dynamic parts, in terms of biodiversity values, but at the same time in the most threatened by hydro-energy projects. This scientific visit will serve to decide on the basic steps they will take in the future. Yesterday, they submitted to the Ministry of Environment the joint memorandum signed by more than 50 professors, with the request for a 3-year moratorium on HPPs in Vjosa.
This period would serve as sufficient time to undertake research that would argue on scientific grounds why hydropower plants should not be built on the last free-flowing river from its source to the estuary.
