CONNECTA – Community-Oriented Nature and Ecosystem Conservation Through Cross-Border Engagement in South-East CCAs

CONNECTA is a cross-border conservation initiative that strengthens ecological connectivity across the Polis-Valamarë-Rungajë-Moravë-Gramoz Connectivity Conservation Area (CCA) in Albania and the transboundary Aoós/Vjosa river basin shared with Greece. The project adopts a landscape-scale approach to conserving biodiversity, restoring ecological connectivity, and enhancing the resilience of ecosystems across one of the Balkans’ most valuable ecological corridors.

The project is implemented by EcoAlbania with financial support from the Prespa Ohrid Nature Trust (PONT), through funding provided by the Fonds Français Pour l’Environnement Mondial (FFEM). The transboundary activities focusing on the Aoós-Vjosa river basin are carried out in collaboration with MedINA (Mediterranean Institute for Nature and Anthropos), strengthening cooperation between Albania and Greece for the protection of shared ecosystems.

Building upon the achievements and partnerships established through the ISCCA Project, CONNECTA continues and expands efforts to strengthen ecological connectivity and biodiversity conservation in the region. The project builds on existing knowledge, stakeholder networks, and conservation actions while extending its focus toward transboundary cooperation and integrated management of connected landscapes and river ecosystems.

Through scientific research and monitoring, stakeholder engagement, capacity building, rehabilitation actions, environmental education, citizen science initiatives, and awareness-raising activities, CONNECTA supports evidence-based conservation and promotes the sustainable management of natural resources. By bringing together local communities, institutions, scientists, and civil society organizations, the project contributes to protecting biodiversity, maintaining ecological corridors, and creating resilient landscapes where both nature and people can thrive.
