It was the September of 1969 where the senator of United States declared that on spring of 1970 there would be demonstrations to protect the environment. At the beginning he proposed a few protest so that the nature protection would become part of the government program. But in a short time this became an international celebration, by sensitizing the whole world. So with the same energy and passion, on 22 April we celebrate Earth Day that marks today its 46 anniversary.
This year is dedicated to the importance of trees, that’s why the slogan is “Tress for Earth”. But this is not a random choice. Here’s why :
(i)Trees help combat climate change by absorbing excess and harmful CO2 from our atmosphere. (ii) They help us breathe clean air by absorbing odors and pollutant gases (nitrogen oxides, ammonia, sulfur dioxide and ozone) and trapping them on their leaves and bark. (iii) They help communities by achieving long-term economy and providing food, energy and income.
The uncontrolled deforestation in Albania in the latest years has become a critic problem for the environment putting into risk the protected areas such as national parks, like Lura National Park. The aim of this day is to incite voluntary actions and sensitize the wide public on the importance that trees have for the nature.
So let’s start to work. Let’s plant more trees. Let’s reduce pollution and clean cities. Let’s make Earth a better place to live, not only today but for the rest of our lives.
