TheNewScientist.org gives an overview on why scientists and activists believe in the global significance of the biodiversity in and around the Vjosa River – the last free flowing river in Europe – and the reasons why the construction of eight planned hydro power plants should be halted.

On the World River Day, held in Tirana, they demanded a halt of these plans, until an environmental assessment according to EU standards has been conducted.
