Radiostation OE1, a service from Austrian public broadcast ORF, published an article about the Vjosa River and the threat it’s facing from several hydro power plants, planned in the region.
Biologists claim the river to have a unique ecosystem, with many endemic species. This will all be lost, if the planned constructions will be realized. Instead eco tourism should be supported by the creation of a National Park.
Even though the Albanian Government could indeed use these kinds of investments, the plans are opposed by local activists and authorities, supported by the NGOs EcoAlbania, Euronatur and Riverwatch.
