GEO.de: Wasserkraft kontra Naturschutz

geo.deScience and travel magazine GEO, publishes a short report about the still free flowing Balkan rivers, that are endangered by hydro power plants.

Especially in Albania, the plans for developments are large and comprehensive, as the country is not yet able to completely provide all the energy it needs.

But environmentalists oppose these plans, saying that of the fish alone, almost 70 species are endemic to that area and were lost to the world, if dams get build. This would also have a fatal impact on other species like birds or the lynx.

The projects get financed from European countries, where on the other hand efforts are undertaken today to undo the damage, that has been done decades ago with the same purpose.
