Financial Post: Quebec hydroelectric firm rides Balkan ‘dam tsunami’ in show case of Canadian expertise.

The Toronto based Financial Post reports about the hydro electric company from Quebec, Canada, who builds hydroelectric dams in Albania at the moment. The small company claims its projects to be environmentally sound and will enable Albania to be more self-sufficient in the electricity sector.

Christiane Zaferl, professor at the Leibniz-Institute of Freshwater Ecology and Inland Fisheries in Berlin, states that whereas there are definite economical values to these kinds of projects, the fact that they are green is questionable.

Ulrich Eichelmann from the NGO Riverwatch clearly states that the impact of dams on biodiversity and the river’s ecosystem in total is disastrous.
