Uncontrolled development of hydropower projects in Albania has put pressure on affected communities and the country’s river network. 540 hydropower plants are planned to be built in the entire territory of Albania, where almost every stream will be charged, causing irreversible damage to the environment. These projects affect tourism potential and cause many social problems, such as conflicts between water users, displacement of residents, loss of property, etc.
EcoAlbania dedicates this prize to all communities and organizations in Albania who every day face the challenge of protecting their water resources and natural ecosystems and continue their resistance regardless of the obstacles they have.
